The Strategy Guide: ChatGPT Pro vs Claude vs Gemini vs Perplexity

A Power User’s $500+/month Breakdown

A power user's breakdown of which premium AI is actually worth your money.

Having built a business that centres around AI-driven automations, I’ve come to rely on a myriad of tools to deliver insightful and impactful solutions for my clients.

Today, I want to discuss the major Chatbots available—specifically, their highest tiers. My goal is to give you an insightful breakdown of these Pro tiers from someone who uses all of them nearly every day. Hopefully, you walk away feeling more informed about these tools and whether the investment is worth it for you and your business.

This one is a doozy. We'll be discussing ChatGPT Pro, Claude Max, Gemini Ultra & Perplexity Pro. But afterwards? You'll be equipped with the knowledge to feel confident in potentially onboarding one of these tools into your business.

Let’s start with the one that kicked off my entire business.

Back in February, when OpenAI released its o1-pro model, I was curious. I told myself I’d play with the $200/month ChatGPT Pro plan for a month, test the extra compute power, and then drop back down to the standard Plus tier.

Fast forward three months? I had built an entire business based on seeing how far ChatGPT Pro alone could take me. Once I onboarded Claude and the others, it became a totally different ball game.

The Contenders: Your One-Sentence Verdicts

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

  • ChatGPT Pro is the smarter version of you, full stop. It excels at ideation, finding the right information, and handling code on its own.

  • Claude Max is your business's Engine Room. With tools like MCP connected, it’s how you actually do things with context and build automated systems.

  • Gemini Ultra is the understated Sous Chef. It has a deep, nuanced understanding of human context that allows it to curate output in a way other models can’t.

  • Perplexity Pro is for the suit and tie. It is a source of truth, citing its sources reliably when you need verifiable, trustworthy information without the fluff.

The Showdown: The Right AI for the Job

Here’s how I use each tool in my day-to-day operations.

For Business Strategy & Ideation (The CEO): ChatGPT Pro

When it came to turning an idea into a business, ChatGPT Pro was my co-founder. It gave me my entire automation playbook, from configuring an offline LLM to launching a live website, newsletter, and client base in less than 30 days. The extra models and constant feature releases make it the single most-used subscription in my stack.

For Building & Execution (The Engine Room): Claude Max

While ChatGPT gave me the playbook, Claude Max, connected via MCP, actually built the business. It translated the playbook into a tangible website, a framework for this newsletter, six client proposals (two of which closed), and the automated Airtable CRM that tracks my entire client ecosystem. It’s the hands on the keyboard.

For Deep Research & Curation (The Analyst): Gemini & Perplexity

When I need to go deep—like ideating on this very article—I turn to Gemini. Google’s decades of data curation give it an incredible advantage in deep research. For anything that needs to be factually bulletproof, I use Perplexity Pro. It does exactly what it says: cites its sources and delivers solid, tangible information every time. As a bonus, its "Labs" feature is fantastic for finance-focused executive types.

For Coding & Debugging (The Engineer): ChatGPT Pro

I recently had a complicated Make.com automation that was giving me a massive headache. It involved Calendly, Notion, Zoom, and Kartra all talking to each other. After wrestling with it, I fed the problem to my old pal ChatGPT Pro. It instantly spotted the issue, turning a huge headache into an "Aha!" moment.

The Frustrations: Where They Fall Short

  • ChatGPT Pro: Its biggest strength is also a weakness. It has so many models that you need to know when to switch between them for optimal results. Defaulting to the highest model isn't always the best choice.

  • Claude Max: For a model with such a massive context window, it’s incredibly frustrating when a chat reaches its token limit right in the middle of a complex workflow. It’s a real "Are you serious?" moment.

  • Gemini Ultra: Honestly, the price just isn't worth it right now. The Pro tier gives you virtually everything Ultra does for a fraction of the cost. The value proposition for Ultra isn’t there yet.

  • Perplexity Pro: It’s brilliant but niche. If you try to use it like a general-purpose chatbot for creative work or ideation, you’ll be mistaken and disappointed.

What’s the real ROI on these tools? For my AI automation business, it’s well over 25x, and I carry these bills every month (except for Gemini Ultra... sorry, Google).

But what about for you?

  • For the Average Business Owner: Honestly? You’ll be fine with the $20/month ChatGPT Plus. It’s a powerhouse that will handle 90% of what you need.

  • For the Power User Ready to Scale: If you have to choose one premium model, make it ChatGPT Pro. It will get you almost all the way there, acting as your strategist and engineer.

  • For the AI-Native Business: If you’re like me and your business runs on this stuff, you need the trifecta: ChatGPT Pro as the brains, Claude Max as the engine, and a clear-headed strategy to bind them together.

Ultimately, the tools are only as good as the human guiding them. Choose your stack, learn its strengths, and start building.
